XM Scalping Cashback — Which Trades Count for Scalpers and High-Frequency Traders
Short answer: yes, scalpers can get cashback on XM with official XM partner code CBT90 — but only on trades held longer than 3 minutes. Under XM's partner terms, trades lasting 3 minutes or less generate no partner commission, so they earn no cashback. Every trade that stays open past that line earns the normal per-lot rate: $4.80 per lot on EURUSD and $9.00 on Gold on a Standard account. XM allows scalping in general; it prohibits only abusive practices such as toxic scalping and latency arbitrage.
Does XM allow scalping?
Yes, in general. XM does not ban scalping as a strategy, by hand or with an Expert Advisor; its client terms only prohibit latency exploitation and arbitrage-type scalping.
What XM's Client Agreement does prohibit is abusive short-term trading. It names latency exploitation, "sniping", "toxic scalping" and arbitrage. These are banned under XM's own terms, with or without a partner code.
Ordinary scalping — short trades on price action, news or a tight range — is allowed. Whether a scalp earns cashback is a separate question. The answer depends mainly on how long the trade stays open.
Which scalping trades earn cashback?
CashBackXM cashback is a share of the partner commission XM pays on your trading. When XM pays no partner commission on a trade, there is no cashback on it. Under XM's partner terms:
| Trade | Earns cashback? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Held more than 3 minutes, closed normally | Yes — full per-lot rate | Counted as closed volume |
| Lasting 3 minutes or less | No | Excluded under XM's partner terms |
| Closed with "close by" or "multiple close by" | No | Excluded under XM's partner terms |
| Margin partly funded by a bonus | Reduced | Cut in proportion to the bonus share of the margin |
| EA (robot) scalping, held more than 3 minutes | Yes | Allowed unless it is "churning" |
| Toxic scalping, latency arbitrage, sniping | Not allowed | Prohibited by XM's Client Agreement |
The 3-minute line applies to each trade, from open to close. You may see other holding times quoted online. The figure in XM's partner terms is three minutes or less.
Worked example: how scalping volume adds up
Scalpers trade often, so volume grows fast. Take a trader who closes 10 EURUSD trades of 0.5 lot a day, on 20 trading days. That is 5 lots a day and 100 lots in the month.
| Scenario | Lots that count | Standard (EURUSD, $4.80/lot) | Ultra Low (EURUSD#, $1.80/lot) |
|---|---|---|---|
| All trades held more than 3 minutes | 100 | $480 | $180 |
| 40 lots closed within 3 minutes | 60 | $288 | $108 |
How it is worked out: 100 lots × $4.80 = $480, and 60 lots × $4.80 = $288. On Ultra Low: 100 × $1.80 = $180, and 60 × $1.80 = $108. This shows how volume and holding time change the total. It is not a forecast of what you will trade or receive. Cashback is credited whether each trade wins or loses. Try your own numbers in the cashback calculator.
Standard or Ultra Low: which account suits scalpers?
Scalpers pay the spread many times a day, so spread matters more to them than to most traders. Neither XM Standard nor Ultra Low charges a commission per trade — the cost is in the spread. Ultra Low has the narrower spread. Standard pays more cashback per lot. Ultra Low symbols end with # (EURUSD#, GOLD#).
| 1 lot of… | Standard | Ultra Low | Cashback gap | Ultra Low must be tighter by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EURUSD | $4.80 | $1.80 | $3.00 | 0.3 pip |
| GBPUSD | $5.30 | $2.70 | $2.60 | 0.26 pip |
| GOLD | $9.00 | $3.70 | $5.30 | 5.3 cents |
On USD-quoted pairs, one pip on a standard lot is worth about $10. So on EURUSD, Ultra Low must be at least 0.3 pip tighter than Standard to make up the $3.00 gap. On Gold, every $0.01 of spread is worth $1.00 per lot, so Ultra Low must be more than 5.3 cents tighter. Compare XM's live spreads on both accounts at the hours you trade. Practical points for scalpers
- Know the 3-minute line. If most of your trades close within seconds, expect little or no cashback. Do not hold trades longer just to pass the line — holding time should follow your trading plan, not the rebate.
- Close positions normally. Trades closed with "close by" or "multiple close by" are excluded.
- Trade on your own funds. When a bonus funds part of the margin, cashback is reduced in proportion. See XM bonus vs cashback.
- Using a robot? EA scalping is allowed under XM's partner terms unless it is churning, and the same 3-minute line applies. More on robots in XM EA cashback.
- Check MyWallet the next day. If the total looks lower than your volume suggests, count how many trades closed within 3 minutes. See how cashback reaches MyWallet.

XM scalping cashback — questions traders ask
Does XM allow scalping?
Yes, in general. XM does not ban scalping. Its Client Agreement prohibits abusive practices only: latency exploitation, sniping, toxic scalping and arbitrage.
Do scalping trades earn cashback on XM?
Yes, if the trade is held more than 3 minutes. Under XM's partner terms, trades lasting 3 minutes or less generate no partner commission, so they earn no cashback. Longer trades earn the normal rate with code CBT90, such as $4.80 per lot on EURUSD on a Standard account.
What is the minimum holding time for XM cashback?
More than 3 minutes. XM's partner terms exclude trades with a duration of three minutes or less from partner commission, and cashback is a share of that commission.
Is Standard or Ultra Low better for scalping with cashback?
It depends on the spread gap. Standard pays more cashback per lot ($4.80 vs $1.80 on EURUSD); Ultra Low has a narrower spread. On EURUSD, Ultra Low must be at least 0.3 pip tighter to make up the $3.00 difference. Neither account charges a per-trade commission.
Do trades closed with close by earn cashback?
No. Under XM's partner terms, positions closed with the "close by" or "multiple close by" functions do not generate partner commission, so they earn no cashback. Close positions normally instead.
Can I scalp with an EA and still get cashback?
Yes. Scalping with an Expert Advisor is allowed under XM's partner terms as long as it is not churning. The same 3-minute rule applies: only trades held longer than 3 minutes earn cashback.
