XM Leverage Explained — Max 1:1000, Margin per Lot and What It Means for Cashback
Short answer: at XM Global, the account-opening form lists leverage up to 1000:1 (1:1000), but XM can apply lower limits depending on the instrument, your account equity and the XM entity that holds your account. Leverage only decides how much margin a trade locks up — at 1:1000, 1 lot of EURUSD needs about 0.1% of its value. It does not change your cashback: with official XM partner code CBT90, 1 lot of EURUSD on a Standard account returns $4.80 at any leverage.
What are leverage and margin?
Leverage lets you open a position that is larger than the money in your account. Margin is the part of your balance that XM sets aside as a deposit while the position is open. The two are linked by one rule: margin = position value ÷ leverage.
| Leverage | Margin as % of position value | Position you can open per $100 of margin |
|---|---|---|
| 1:50 | 2% | $5,000 |
| 1:100 | 1% | $10,000 |
| 1:500 | 0.2% | $50,000 |
| 1:1000 | 0.1% | $100,000 |
Leverage does not change how much each price move is worth. That depends only on your lot size. What leverage changes is how large a position your balance can support — and so how fast a losing trade can use up your account.
What is XM's maximum leverage?
On the XM Global account-opening form (XM Global Limited, regulated by the FSC in Belize), the highest leverage you can choose is 1000:1. That is the account setting, not a promise for every trade:
- Instrument: maximum leverage can differ by instrument — the contract specifications in your platform show what applies.
- Account equity: XM can adjust the maximum leverage based on account equity.
- XM entity: accounts held with other XM entities follow their local regulator's rules, which can differ.
The exact limits change over time and differ by country, so check the current figures in your XM Members Area or on XM's website before you trade. We do not quote them here because we could not confirm them on XM's site today.
How much margin does 1 lot need on XM?
1 standard lot of EURUSD is 100,000 euros. To keep the arithmetic simple, assume EURUSD is at 1.1000, so 1 lot is worth about $110,000. The margin at each leverage is then:
| Leverage | 1.00 lot | 0.10 lot | 0.01 lot |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:50 | about $2,200 | about $220 | about $22 |
| 1:100 | about $1,100 | about $110 | about $11 |
| 1:500 | about $220 | about $22 | about $2.20 |
| 1:1000 | about $110 | about $11 | about $1.10 |
These are approximations at an assumed price. The real figure moves with the exchange rate and with any lower limit XM applies to the instrument. Your platform shows the exact margin before you place the order. How much you need to fund an account is covered in XM minimum deposit.
Does higher leverage earn more cashback?
No. Cashback is a fixed amount per lot of closed volume. Leverage is not part of the calculation. A 1-lot EURUSD trade on a Standard account returns $4.80 whether your account is set to 1:50 or 1:1000.
| Symbol (account) | Cashback per lot at 1:100 | Cashback per lot at 1:1000 |
|---|---|---|
| EURUSD (Standard) | $4.80 | $4.80 |
| GOLD / XAUUSD (Standard) | $9.00 | $9.00 |
| EURUSD# (Ultra Low) | $1.80 | $1.80 |
Higher leverage only lets you open bigger positions with the same balance. Bigger positions mean more lots, but they also mean bigger losses when the price moves against you. Raising leverage to collect more cashback is a poor trade-off: the cashback is a small fixed amount per lot, while the risk grows with every lot. Rates for every symbol are on the rates table, and the account choice is explained in XM account types and cashback.
Why 1:1000 leverage is risky
Leverage magnifies losses exactly as much as it magnifies gains. Take a $100 deposit at 1:1000, using the same assumed EURUSD price of 1.1000:
- 0.5 lot of EURUSD needs only about $55 of margin, so the platform lets you open it.
- At 0.5 lot, 1 pip is worth about $5. A 20-pip move against you costs about $100 — the whole deposit.
- The cashback on that 0.5 lot is $2.40 ($4.80 × 0.5). It does not come close to covering the loss.
At 1:100, the same $100 covers only about 0.09 lot (about $99 of margin), and a 20-pip move costs about $18. Lower leverage did not make the trade better; it limited how big the position could be. XM lists negative balance protection as standard on its accounts, and its margin call and stop-out rules are shown in your Members Area — but you can still lose the full deposit. This example illustrates the arithmetic only. It is not a forecast and not a trading recommendation.
Cashback conditions that apply at any leverage
Under XM's partner terms, some trades do not earn cashback, whatever your leverage:
- Trades that last 3 minutes or less.
- Positions closed with "close by" or "multiple close by".
- Trades where the margin is funded by a bonus — cashback is reduced in proportion. See XM bonus vs cashback.
- Churning (trading only to generate volume).

XM leverage — questions traders ask
What is the maximum leverage on XM?
At XM Global, the account-opening form offers leverage up to 1000:1 (1:1000). XM can apply lower limits depending on the instrument, your account equity and the XM entity that holds your account, so check the current limits in your Members Area.
Does XM 1:1000 leverage apply to every instrument?
No. 1:1000 is the highest account setting. Maximum leverage can differ by instrument and account equity, and XM can change its limits; check your Members Area for what applies to you. The platform shows the margin required before you open a trade.
How much margin do I need for 1 lot of EURUSD on XM?
Margin is the position value divided by leverage. If EURUSD is at 1.1000, 1 lot is worth about $110,000, so margin is about $1,100 at 1:100 and about $110 at 1:1000. The real figure moves with the price.
Does higher leverage give more cashback on XM?
No. Cashback is paid per lot of closed volume, not per unit of leverage. With partner code CBT90, 1 lot of EURUSD on a Standard account returns $4.80 at 1:100 and at 1:1000. Higher leverage only allows bigger positions, which raises risk.
Is 1:1000 leverage risky?
Yes. High leverage lets a small deposit open a large position, so a small price move can wipe out the account. With $100 at 1:1000, a 20-pip move against a 0.5-lot EURUSD position costs about $100. Cashback does not offset losses like this.
Can I change my leverage on XM?
Leverage is set per trading account. The levels available to you and how to change them depend on your XM entity and account, so check your XM Members Area or ask XM support. Changing leverage does not affect your cashback rate.
