XM Lot Size Explained — 1 Lot, 0.1 Lot and 0.01 Lot (with Cashback per Size)

Short answer: on XM, 1 standard lot of a Forex pair is 100,000 units of the first currency, and 1 lot of Gold (XAUUSD) is 100 ounces. 0.1 lot is one tenth of that and 0.01 lot — the smallest size — is one hundredth. On pairs quoted in USD such as EURUSD, a one-pip move is worth about $10 per lot, $1 at 0.1 lot and $0.10 at 0.01 lot. Cashback scales the same way: with partner code CBT90, 1 lot of Gold returns $9.00, 0.1 lot returns $0.90 and 0.01 lot returns $0.09.

What is a lot on XM?

A lot is the unit XM uses to measure the size of a trade. Instead of typing "100,000 euros" or "100 ounces of Gold", you choose a lot size, and the platform converts it into the contract amount for that instrument. Everything that depends on size — how much each price move is worth, the spread you pay, and the cashback you get back — is quoted per lot.

Lot sizeCommon nameForex pair (e.g. EURUSD)Gold (XAUUSD)
1.00Standard lot100,000 units of the base currency100 oz
0.10Mini lot10,000 units10 oz
0.01Micro lot (smallest size)1,000 units1 oz

"Micro lot" here means the 0.01 trade size. It is not the same thing as XM's Micro account, which is an account type with its own contract specifications — if you trade on a Micro account, check the contract size shown in your platform.

What is 1 pip worth per lot?

A pip is the standard unit of price movement — the fourth decimal on most pairs (0.0001), the second on JPY pairs. On pairs where the US dollar is the second currency (EURUSD, GBPUSD, AUDUSD, NZDUSD), the value is simple:

Lot size1 pip on EURUSD10 pips on EURUSD
1.00 lotabout $10about $100
0.10 lotabout $1about $10
0.01 lotabout $0.10about $1

On other pairs the pip value moves with the exchange rate, so treat the figures above as a rule of thumb for USD-quoted pairs only. XM's platform shows the exact value before you place the order.

What is 1 lot of Gold worth per move?

Because 1 lot of XAUUSD is 100 ounces, every $0.01 change in the Gold price is worth $1.00 per lot, and a $1.00 change is worth $100 per lot. At 0.01 lot (1 oz), the same $1.00 move is worth $1. This is why Gold positions feel bigger than Forex positions of the same lot size — and why lot size is the first thing to get right when you trade it.

How much cashback does each lot size earn?

CashBackXM cashback is a fixed amount per lot, so it scales exactly with your trade size — from the smallest 0.01 lot, with no cap. Rates for accounts opened with partner code CBT90:

Symbol (account)1.00 lot0.10 lot0.01 lot
GOLD / XAUUSD (Standard)$9.00$0.90$0.09
BTCUSD (Standard)$10.60$1.06$0.106
GBPUSD (Standard)$5.30$0.53$0.053
EURUSD (Standard)$4.80$0.48$0.048
GOLD# (Ultra Low)$3.70$0.37$0.037
EURUSD# (Ultra Low)$1.80$0.18$0.018

Cashback is counted on closed volume, not on the number of trades. Ten trades of 0.1 lot and one trade of 1 lot both add up to 1 lot — $9.00 on Gold either way. Rates for every pair are on the rates table, and Gold is covered in detail in XM Gold cashback.

Worked example: small lots add up

A trader who closes 0.5 lot of Gold twice a day, on 20 trading days, has traded 20 lots in the month. On a Standard account under CBT90 that is $180 credited to MyWallet over the month — win or lose on the individual trades. The same volume on EURUSD returns $96. This illustrates how volume adds up; it is not a forecast of what you will trade or earn. Try your own volume in the cashback calculator.

Which lot size should you use?

Lot size decides how much money each price move is worth, so it is a risk decision first, not a cashback decision. Cashback never makes a larger position safer: it returns part of your trading cost, but a $1.00 move against a 1-lot Gold position is still $100. Many traders size each position so that the distance to their stop-loss risks only a small share of the account, and start at 0.01 lot while they learn how an instrument moves. Trade the size that fits your plan — cashback will follow whatever volume you trade.

What is 0.01 lot of Gold on XM?

0.01 lot of XAUUSD is 1 ounce of Gold. A $1.00 move in the Gold price is worth about $1 at that size. With partner code CBT90 on a Standard account, each 0.01 lot of Gold earns $0.09 cashback.

How much is 1 pip worth on XM?

On pairs quoted in US dollars, such as EURUSD or GBPUSD, 1 pip is worth about $10 per standard lot, $1 at 0.1 lot and $0.10 at 0.01 lot. On other pairs it varies with the exchange rate; the platform shows the exact value.

Do I get cashback on 0.01 lot trades?
